Topic: Forest Resources Management in Cambodia
Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen, First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am Tak Sovanny, from Cambodia. I work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ladies and Gentlemen! I am very delighted to talk about the Management of forestry resources in Cambodia. The problem if the forestry affects the environment is a source for worry not only for Cambodia but also for all the people around the world.
To start with, let me give you the main points of my talk:
1. What is forest resources?
2. Why does the Royal Government of Cambodia pay attention to protect the forest resources?
3. What should the Royal Government of Cambodia do to protect the forest resources during the ban on timber export?
The forest resource is a major national asset with 60 percent of the land area estimate as forest. Forest makes an important contribution to the rural economy by providing 90% of rural areal energy supply in Cambodia. Fire-wood and charcoal accounted for 50% of the total wood demand in 1995. The forestry management resources discovered problems because of an inability to manage the concession zone due to a lack of effective enforcement.
The Royal Government of Cambodia paid attention to protect forest resources because in the past few years it was noted that widespread illegal login threatened the live hood of the Cambodians. If the forest was destroyed, what would happen to our poor country? I find that Cambodia will face heavy floods and drought storms caused by deforestation. it would affect many sectors such as rural development, water systems dam and canal infrastructure, roads, and houses. moreover, it would affect the agriculture and ecological system.
To protect the forest resources, the government of Cambodia takes measures against illegal logging. The government must strictly fulfill its strategies as follow:
- Stop immediately the nationwide log trade including buy-in and transportation of any types of logs.
- Cancel the tax exemption on any type of round log transportation.
- Prohibit any forest concession and maintain its sustainability to protect the natural environment.
- Review of all forest concession agreements
- Ban hunting, transportation, purchasing, and selling wildlife.
- Ban cutting down trees and cleaning and property ownership.
We hope that the Royal Government of Cambodia will succeed in managing the forest resources in the country.
