How to use Pronouns?

The PRONOUNS are the most important forms of grammar in the English language. This is something that commonly used when studying English and you have to know all of what a pronoun are, however it has been used and where it fits into a sentence. And today lesson, we gonna get to know it more about how does the pronouns work and what they are used for.


Normally, a pronoun is a word that takes the position of a noun. One of the most commonly used forms of the pronoun are names of people, for example, Bopha, Sopheak, Oudom or Animal. However, a pronoun could also be one of the following words:


  • He/she
  • It
  • They
  • Me
  • Himself
  • Somebody/everybody/anybody.....

A pronoun is used to replace of a noun or noun phrase in a sentence. A pronoun may take place of the name of a person, place or thing.

Examples: I, me, himself, we, they, ourselves, you, he, she, it, yours, its, who, my, that, this, those, us, whom…

There are many more examples of pronouns, and you might think of them as pointing towards possession. As we mentioned, the pronoun is used as a way of replacing a noun, take a look at the following sentence:

  • This basket has more fruit and the basket is heavy.
  • The student who learns English with Rean English168 such as Bopha, Oudom, Vibol are smart.
  • Hello sir, could you give me and my mom, my dad, my sister a glass of water please.
  • This toy cars is belong to me.
  • Bora doesn't need any help for his exercise.

However it could be replaced with a pronoun now that we know what item is talking about, and here is the better sentence which is used by pronoun

  • This basket has more fruit and it is heavy. (the basket)
  • The student who learns English with Rean English168, they are smart. (such as Bopha, Oudom, Vibol)
  • Hello sir, could you give us a glass of water please. (me and my mom, my dad, my sister)
  • This toy cars is mine. (belong to me)
  • Bora does his exercise by himself. (don't need any help for)

Personal Pronouns

This type of pronoun is used to refer to a person, animal, thing, in this category you will see words such as I, we, you, they, he, she, it.

I like to listen to music.
We learn English with Rean English168 together.
You are my best friend.

There are two types of personal pronouns: subject and object.

Subject pronouns are used. When the person or thing is the subject of the sentence, 



Subject pronoun list: I, you, we, they he, she, it.

Examples:
  • I play football, but she does not.
  • You cannot judge the book by its cover.
  • She plays tennis with him.
  • He studies hard to pass the exam.
Object pronouns are used when the person or thing is the object of the sentence.

Object pronoun list: me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them.

Examples:
  • Dany likes me but not him.
  • Vibol will call her soon.
  • Don’t tell him the truth.
  • I helped them pull his boots off.

Reflexive Pronouns

The reflexive pronoun will end in -self or -selves and it's used in reference to another pronoun. Words within the category are myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves. In English, reflexive pronouns are used when a person or thing acts on itself.

Examples:
    • He cooks dinner by himself.
    • You can't do it by yourself.
    • We could travel by ourselves

Possessive Adjective VS Possessive Pronouns

In English, possessive pronouns are used to indicate possession or ownership. They are: mine, yours, ours, his, hers, theirs.

Examples:

  • Do you see my book on the table. It is mine.
  • Why do you ware her shoe? It is not yours
  • This is not your house. It is ours.
